This season, the color red is trending in fashion, and that makes us think that home decor will follow suit. But how do we decorate with red without making it feel overwhelming? We are happy to share a few design tips on how to make red a part of your living space.
Where to Use Red?
Red is a vibrant color that easily captures our attention in a space. It evokes energy, movement, and speed. While red might not be a good choice for a space that is used for rest, such as the bedroom, it might be just the right color to create a great accent in kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms, and foyers where conversations and a lot of movement are common. A red accent might look nice in an office space, too, especially if the rest of the colors are neutral.
Choose the Right Shade of Red
For accent pieces and accessories, consider all shades of red, from pastel red to burgundy, and coordinate them with the rest of the colors and finishes used in your home. For wall paint, look at more muted and darker shades of red, which will be softer on the eyes. We recommend Preference Red from Farrow & Ball.
Choose a Color Scheme
Red might look too bold as a standalone color, but it works amazingly in combination with other colors. Red and navy is a classic and very stylish pairing. Red, coral, pink, and blue bring a fresh spring vibe. Red and soft neutrals is an excellent option, too.
Add Red Through Pattern and Trim
Custom upholstered furniture and custom-made window treatments allow for so much creativity when decorating with red. Look for fabrics that have a pop of red or add a red tape trim to window treatments or furniture for a look that feels pretty and unique. We've used the Tulip Hand Block fabric, the Garden Path Hand Block Print fabric and the Military Stripe Tape trim from Schumacher for the examples below.
Add a Red Accent Piece
A single red accent piece might be just what you need to introduce color into your space. Consider options such as a deep burgundy sofa, a red accent chair, a red sideboard, or a red rug to complement a room with neutral tones. A red lighting fixture could look very stylish and an artwork with a splash of red could tie your room design together.

Those are just a few ways to incorporate red into your space. We hope you find our tips useful. We'd love to hear your thoughts on decorating with red, and we're here if you need help with transforming your space.
